Deuteronomy 14 - The Heart of Distinction Behind the Law

Deuteronomy 14 - The Heart of Distinction Behind the Law

Something that the Pharisees lost when recognizing what the Law was aiming at was the importance of the distinction between children of God and pagans. The purpose of the eating and burial law is something that can still easily be applied today. A good example specifically regarding the burial of a loved one is that Christians should be celebrating the life of the individual and hopeful that they are alive in Christ rather than focusing only on the loss and mourning.

13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
15 For this we declare to you See by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.

Paul teaches in 1 Thessalonians 4 that a good way for Christians to show how different their outlook is by the way they mourn the deaths of loved ones. Just like everything else we are called to obey, this is extremely difficult to do in practice but when we live by this, it is an extremely bright light to those who do not know Jesus.

As with many of the eating laws that come along with this chapter, we are not called to these specifics as outlined by the apostles and Jesus, but there is still a message to be had here. The heart behind these eating laws also seems to be rooted in health at the time and age they were given. This could easily line up with what the apostles taught regarding our bodies being temples for the Holy Spirit and we should treat them with respect.

Finally we have the call to tithe and the scripture even outlines an option for those that are unable to tithe some kind of first-fruits physically showing that God is loving and reasonable when it comes to this command. What a merciful and loving God we have that each command given is well reasoned and carefully designed to keep His people safe.
